Old factory cert mechanic here, "Shovel Head" era, they painted the insides of crankcases into the early 70s, to help with casting sand getting into the roller bearings. I used to manufacture tapping machines, and on these we used Polane paint. For texture we sprayed a few regular coats of paint but the last "coat" was splattered on via setting the gun pressure very low. But that finish was different from what I am seeing on these new machines. So, anyone know how they achieve the type of finish I'm talking about ?

Taking a machine down to the bare castings is opening a pandora's box. If the base filler is good then clean the oils and greases off the machine, sand/wire brush the machine to move loose paint and scuff the surface. Clean the machine again, then clean it a 3rd time. Maybe even a 4th time LoL. Then paint the machine.

I have a 30 year old Kalamazoo horisontal bandsaw .It has a sheet steel coolant tank that developed pin hole leaks. I brazed the holes shut,then had it sandblasted white metal clean. I took it directly to the truck bedliner place and had them lay it on thick. I told them I didnt care if it had runs or what it looked like cosmeticly.

A good coat of primer and a carefully applied Rustoleum rattle-can paint job (or other quality paint) will last for many year indoors. Like BW said, most of these old machines never saw a coat of primer to start with.

It comes in several colors that look good on machines and tool boxes. Some on my machines and boxes were originally painted with a similar paint. I would not put it on an antique. But I like it better than the original finish on some machines. That ugly gold paint on Darex end mill grinders looks a lot better hidden under the grey hammertone.
